CNS students combine diverse skills in ongoing research project

In a small lab on the second floor of the Center for Natural Sciences, students in the Department of Physics and Astronomy have been working on a unique project: studying colloidal particles, microscopic particles that are held in water, using optical tweezers — a microscope combined with a laser to hold and trap particles. 
Tariq Meyers ’14 was a Martin Luther King Scholar during his time at Ithaca College. Now he is the chief careers officer for Podium Education and co-founder and co-CEO of Untapped, a career talent platform designed to close the opportunity gap for college students.

Tariq Meyers ’14 graduated from Ithaca College with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government as a Martin Luther King Scholar. The MLK Scholarship is awarded to students of color with demonstrated leadership within academic or home communities, providing them with resources to develop their personal and academic skills. Meyers attributed much of who he is and where he is today to the program and said he believes it served as the entry point into his career. 
Nia Nunn, associate professor in the Department of Education, is the president of the Community Unity Music Education Program. CUMEP educates children by employing music, performance and awareness on social justice issues to promote a welcoming and well-rounded environment for all participants in the program.

Nia Nunn, associate professor in the Department of Education at Ithaca College, is the president of the Community Unity Music Education Program, which helps uplift children’s voices and awareness through unique teaching styles and traditions.

The Ithaca College Board of Trustees held an open meeting Oct. 11 to give an overview of its fall meetings and answer questions from the 18 attendees that gathered in the Clark Lounge. The trustees spoke about generative AI and the college’s decreasing enrollment.

New club creates safe space for women in tech

Girls Who Code at Ithaca College is a student-led computer science club that began in Fall 2024. It focuses on community and portfolio building for women and non-binary students in the field. Currently, there are 24 members, including five executive board members.

Ithaca College’s Faculty Council met Oct. 1 to discuss the changes and successes of the summer academic onboarding and pre-registration process. The council also heard new plans from the college’s Marketing and Communications team.
Higher education enrollment has been decreasing nationally at a rate of 1.5% each year since 2011. Graduate students make up 11.69% of Ithaca College's student population, but excluding The School of HS&HP students, graduate students make up only approximately 1%.

Ithaca College and many colleges and universities across the U.S. are amid a higher education enrollment cliff. However, while undergraduate enrollment is down at the college — outpacing the national dip — graduate enrollment is growing despite a national decline.

Self-help and wellness app Sanvello, which was previously utilized by students and employees of Ithaca College, is no longer available after its parent company, UnitedHealth, merged with a telehealth service called Self Care by AbleTo. The app has been replaced by Wysa, another cost-free self-help app for the campus community that features an AI chatbot.

IC replaces mental health app after previous provider sunsets operations
