Here’s to the WNBA

So the WNBA season wrapped up last night with the Minnesota Lynx defeating the Atlanta Dream to win the WNBA Finals 2-0. I know the WNBA has its naysayers for not featuring as many dunks as the NBA. It’s also true that its most successful franchise, the Houston Comets won four straight titles and still wound up folding before the end of the last decade.

But you’ve got to hand it to the WNBA: 15 years after its founding, the league is still alive and not tied up in a lockout like its male counterpart. And given that there are millions of female sports fans and athletes out there, not to mention Title IX has been in effect for more or less four decades now, it’s pretty ridiculous the WNBA, LPGA, WPS and WTA are the only major professional sports leagues out there for women. Female sports fans root for teams in the very much all-male NFL and other all-male leagues. You’d think us guys could repay them the favor by not treating the WNBA and other women’s sports like a total joke.
