Baseball: Bombers post second straight shutout in win against SUNY-Oswego

The Ithaca College baseball team defeated the SUNY-Oswego Lakers by a score of 6–0 today on Freeman Field. The Bombers are now 9—3 and ranked 20th nationally by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Junior Pat Lemmo started on the mound for the Blue and Gold and pitched seven scoreless innings while striking out four batters. Freshman pitcher Quinn Irwin and senior pitcher Tucker Healy closed out the final two innings.

Despite getting nine hits and drawing two walks, the visiting Lakers were unable to score any runs. In total, SUNY-Oswego left 10 runners on base. Lakers Head Coach Scott Landers said such a lack of timely hitting led to the loss.

“I thought we swung pretty well,” he said. “We just couldn’t get runs in when we had runners in scoring position.”

On the other hand, the Bombers got enough offensive production for the victory. Senior centerfielder Mike Rosenbaum led the way with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. His two-run home run in the first inning jumpstarted the South Hill squad’s offense. Rosenbaum said he was excited to hit the first home run of his career.

“The pitcher just threw me a fastball right up and in and I just turned on it,” he said. “And I knew right away and it was nice because it was my first home run.”

Even though the team came away with a victory, Head Coach George Valesente still saw some improvements his team needs to make.

“I didn’t think we had our typical intensity and I was a little disappointed with that,” he said. “But even with that we were able to stick with it and win a ball game.”

The next game for the South Hill Squad is 4 p.m. Wednesday on Freeman Field against SUNY-Cortland, the eighth ranked team in the country according to the American Baseball Coaches Association.
