Men’s soccer to host Empire 8 playoffs with 1–0 win over Alfred

Unbeaten in its last five matches, the men’s soccer team looked to close out the regular season in similar fashion as it traveled to Alfred University on Oct. 31. The Bombers would go on to win 1–0 over the Saxons to conclude the regular season.

With the win, the Blue and Gold captured the first overall spot in the Empire 8 conference and will host the Empire 8 Championship on Nov. 6–7.

It was a rough game to start, with the teams trading fouls early on.

The Bombers found a breakthrough in the 32nd minute, as a corner kick from junior midfielder Sam Boylan found the head of junior defender Andrew Coburn for the 1–0 lead. The score remained the same as the first half ended soon after.

The second half was a defensive battle, as the Saxons upped their offensive intensity and the South Hill squad looked to hit back on the counter attack.

Each team had their chances, but the goalkeepers each turned in solid efforts. Sophomore Christopher Gutierrez made seven saves for the Saxons, while junior Zach Jacobsen matched him for the Bombers with seven of his own.

It was the first half header that separated them though, as the 1–0 score held and the Bombers took the match and their fifth clean sheet in their six previous matches.

The South Hill squad finishes the regular season with a 6–1 conference record and ends with 7–7–2 overall.
