According to a Public Safety Alert sent via email to the college community Nov. 4, the three swastikas are being investigated as vandalism of property and possible hate crimes.

Three swastikas were reported in the James J. Whalen Center for Music on Nov. 4, raising the number of swastikas found on the Ithaca College campus in 2022 to eight.

Five separate incidents of vandalism depicting swastikas have been reported on Ithaca College’s campus since January 2022.
IC Hillel, the Center for IDEAS and the college’s senior leadership collaborated to hold the “IC Day of Learning: Grappling with Antisemitism”  from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m Feb. 28 in Emerson Suites.

In between classes Feb. 28 the campus community engaged in an open dialogue about antisemitism in response to symbols of hate found on campus.  
Following the discovery of the first swastika in Baker Walkway, Interim President La Jerne Cornish sent an email to the campus community condemning the symbol Feb 4. After the second swastika was found in Whalen, the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management sent out an alert Feb. 8 to the campus community.

Two swastikas found drawn in Ithaca College campus buildings

Since Feb. 3, two separate swastikas have been found drawn on the IC campus. Both are under investigation –– one as a potential vandalism hate crime.
Ivy Walz served as the interim dean of the School of Music during the 2021–22 academic year. In 2020, Walz stepped into an administrative role as assistant dean after former dean Karl Paulnack stepped down at the end of the 2019–20 academic year.
