Commentary: A comprehensive music curriculum is essential to student success

A few years ago, the music history curriculum here at Ithaca College was updated to include more diverse topics and underrepresented voices, de-emphasizing the Western Classical canon. However, in the curriculum’s current case study format, it does not prepare students for success as professionals in a diverse world.
The summary was shared Feb. 1, 2023, with music faculty and staff, and participants remained unnamed. In the summary, faculty and staff without tenure and faculty and staff of color expressed feeling silenced and ignored by senior faculty.

Cultural review in former School of Music exposes tension among employees
