Ithaca is often painted as a progressive town full of acceptance and inclusivity, particularly when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community. While this acceptance can be seen in the attitudes and beliefs of the local community, there is still a need for more accessible resources and spaces for the queer community.

According to Ithaca College’s hate crime log, there were five reported hate crimes in 2022 as compared to one in 2021, marking an increase in violence on campus. All of these instances were acts of destruction of property. In 2023, there were two hate crimes committed on campus. While this decrease signifies a move towards a safer campus climate, it is imperative that the college continues to take preventive measures to reduce hate crimes on campus.

The Tompkins County Human Rights Commission shared a resolution Dec. 18, 2023, calling for the community to promote peace by advocating for a federal ceasefire and supporting local Jewish and Muslim community members. At Ithaca College, this call for peace is happening just as fervently among students.

During October 2023, Ithaca College implemented a dress code for all varsity athletes that applies during practices, when traveling across campus and when using facilities in the Athletics and Events Center.
