Digital Instruction and Information Services said it has fixed the majority of the network problems that brought down the Ithaca College website, WICB streams and on-campus networks over the weekend and into the week.
According to an announcement from DIIS, as of 7:30 a.m. March 15, all major systems are up and running. However, there are still problems with the wireless connections. According to the announcement, on-campus wireless is not functioning.
Keith McIntosh, associate vice president for DIIS, said maintenance was scheduled from about 1 p.m. March 12 to 1 p.m. March 13 but was extended when problems arose. He said the outage was not related to network issues reported at the beginning of March.
McIntosh said maintenance was scheduled to replace the core switches — the hubs where network data is aggregated, organized and distributed — and brought in an outside vendor, Brocade, to help.
Sophomore WICB Web Director Aaron Zufall said WICB — the college’s student-operated FM radio station — was unable to broadcast web streams through its website, app and iHeartRadio for almost two days. Zufall said people in the area could listen to the FM station but said alumni and college radio fans could not tune in.
“I had one person ask this time, it was down for so long, some was just like, ‘Are you guys not streaming online anymore?’” he said.
McIntosh said the progress is slow, but he estimates the remaining fixes to last no more than two days.
“Our game plan is to get things up as short as possible,” McIntosh said.
McIntosh said there is more maintenance that needs to be scheduled in the coming weeks. According to an announcement from Apogee, Ithaca College’s Internet provider, on March 14, more maintenance is scheduled from March 14 to 18 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
“We’re going to have to have continual renovations for the network upgrades, not including the switches we just did, but we’re going to have to do firewalls and other devices as well,” McIntosh said.
