Heading into this weekend’s game against Alfred, the men’s football team at Ithaca College is currently 4-4 on the season. If they lose any combination of the Alfred game and/or Cortaca, it will mark the end of their 40-year streak of winning seasons, second longest in college football. To put that into perspective, here’s what was happening in sports when the season began in 1970.

• The Baltimore Orioles, led by future Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson, beat Pete Rose and the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 in the last all-day game World Series.
• The Boston Bruins, led by Bobby Orr, swept the St. Louis Blues in the Stanley Cup Finals, with Orr scoring one of the most famous goals in hockey history in the process.
• The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Minnesota Vikings 23-7 in the last Super Bowl before the AFL-NFL merger.
• The New York Knicks defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 4-3 in the NBA Finals, with Willis Reed making one of the greatest injury comebacks in sports history in Game 7
• Brazil defeated Italy 4-1 to win the FIFA World Cup, with Pele playing in the tournament for the last time.
• Bob Lanier and Terry Bradshaw were drafted with the #1 pick in the NBA and NFL drafts by the Detroit Pistons and Pittsburgh Steelers respectively.
