Student groups focus on issues during election

In the midst of a highly politicized presidential election, Ithaca College student organizations are trading in partisan politics for a real look at the issues facing voters this election season.

During the 2008 presidential election student groups like Ithaca College Environmentalists, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender groups, African, Latino/a  and Asian groups publicly endorsed a candidate. But this year many student leaders are opting not to voice support for either presidential candidate.

This shift shows students are taking the time to look beyond party affiliation and recognize that, while their groups may have political agendas, members should be free to voice individual opinions. This is especially important within groups that represent minority voices and serves as a reminder that not all voters in specific demographics think the same way or prioritize the same policies.

While individuals may indulge in Facebook “Mittens” memes or SNL clips, the overall message of tolerance toward political difference is a welcome break from the negative nature of campaign politics.
