The Ithaca College women’s soccer team opened up its season at the Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament against the Sage College Gators with a 2–0 victory Sept. 3. This win marks the eighth consecutive victory in a season opener for the team.
The Bombers were able to limit the Gators to only two shots in the first half while taking a staggering 12 shots on Sage’s defense.
The first half of play went scoreless. The Bombers and Gators were unable to capitalize and take a lead.
In the second half, the Bombers came alive and secured their win. The team was able to break open the scoring in the 61st minute when freshman Jordyn Haynes found the back of the net off a pass from senior Megan Nash. Just a minute and 20 seconds later, Haynes scored the second goal of her collegiate career off a cross from senior Jocelyn Ravesi.
The Bombers were able to control the pace for the rest of the game, letting up just one more shot while taking three more themselves in the final minutes.
Senior goalkeeper Karen Macke started in goal for the Bombers, earning the first win of her collegiate career. Sophomore Stacey Digiorgio also saw action in the net in the second half.
The Bombers handed the Gators their first loss of the season. The Gators are now 2–1 overall.
The Bombers play in the next round of the Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament against the hosts of the tournament, SUNY New Paltz, at 12 p.m. Sept. 4.
