Swimming and diving teams bring home two wins in first meet

The Ithaca College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated SUNY Brockport and SUNY Fredonia on Oct. 22 to start their seasons.

The women’s team defeated Brockport 226–72 and Fredonia by a score of 236–64, while the men’s team defeated Brockport 222–72 and Fredonia 166–132. The Bombers won 20 out of the 32 events.

The first event of the day was the women’s 200yard medley relay, where the Bombers came in first, second, fourth and fifth. The firstplace team consisted of seniors Sam Reilly, Grace Ayer, Cassie Papeleo and Lake Duffy.

In the men’s 200-yard medley, the Bombers team of freshman Andrew Mikhailichenko and seniors Gregory Markert, Adam Zelehowsky and Connor Schroyer came in second.

Senior Brenna Dowd won the 1,000-yard freestyle, while sophomore Jake Hewitt took a win in the men’s event for the Bombers.

The Bombers won both the women’s and men’s 200-yard freestyle, with Ayer and Zelehowsky both placing first.

Papeleo won the women’s 100-yard butterfly, while Zelehowsky picked up his third win of the day in the men’s 100-yard butterfly. The Bombers also came away with firstplace finishes in the 50-yard freestyle, with Duffy taking the win in the women’s event and sophomore Aaron Levin placed first in the men’s event.

Reilly won the 100-yard backstroke, while senior Cat Tompkins took the top spot in the women’s 500-yard freestyle and Hewitt got his second win of the day in the men’s 500yard freestyle.

Ayer took first in the 100-yard individual medley, and her team later came in second for the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay. The Bombers rounded out the meet with a firstplace finish in the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Bombers will compete in their home opener at 1 p.m. Oct. 29 against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the Athletics and Events Center.
