Editorial: Ithaca College hijacks narratives through Open House letter

As evidenced by the hypocrisy present in the differences between the administration’s responses to the racism in the Alpha Epsilon Pi party dress code and the racist comments made at the Blue Sky Reimagining Kick-Off event, it is no secret that the college has some work to do when it comes to issuing public statements.

Members of the Ithaca College faculty are discussing holding a vote of no confidence in President Tom Rochon.
Student Government Association senators Charlotte Robertson and Kaitlin Logsdon vote at the Oct. 26 meeting. The senate passed a bill to initiate a student vote of no confidence in President Tom Rochon. The polls will open Nov. 4.

In response to recent campus protests, racial tensions and issues of exclusivity, the Ithaca College Student Government Association passed a bill Oct. 26 to initiate a student vote of no confidence regarding President Tom Rochon.
POC at IC protested at the Ithaca College Open House event on Oct. 24, both in response to an administrative statement put in the folders of all prospective students and to educate Open House attendees on the campus climate. The students issued their own statement to the visitors.

Members of the POC at IC group assembled around 8 a.m. today at the Dillingham Fountains chanting “Tom Rochon; no confidence.” “No more dialogue; we want action,” as they awaited tour groups of prospective students and their parents as part of the Ithaca College Fall Open House.
President Tom Rochon and Benjamin Rifkin, provost and vice president of educational affairs, met with 18  members of the POC at IC group 8 a.m. Oct. 23. The meeting comes after the group held a rally Oct. 21 protesting racism on campus.

Over 200 Ithaca College students, faculty and staff gathered at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 21 around Free Speech Rock to protest against racism on campus and to demand action from administration, with a number of members of the Ithaca College Board of Trustees in the audience.
