Tragedy can strike like a lightning bolt smashing around you out of a seemingly cloudless sky. You go about your day, sitting, say, with a cup of tea on a sunny Thursday morning in your favorite coffee shop when the dean calls with news of your student’s death, and you spend the next 20 minutes pacing outside, crying, calling your wife, your sister and wanting to call every loved one you have to make sure they are OK. Grief can simply overload your circuits.

Independent media is crucial amid an increasingly polarizing society and expansive corporate, capitalist media consolidation. In many respects, news is now functioning as spectacle for profit, rather than relaying important information or creating impactful community-driven stories. A way that we combat this is through the support of independent media. A free press is not only important for a functioning democracy, but also for a thriving society.

We enrolled at IC under certain pretenses and a belief in the commitments that the college made to us. If we want to change the institution for the better, we should take advantage of whatever leverage and power we have as students. Find like minded people, create coalitions and work to improve the college together.
