Ithaca College has a rich history of expression, and its free speech policy has changed over time as issues arise within and beyond campus. The college’s free speech policy, written in Section 2.31 in the policy manual, highlights how the college responds to free expression while maintaining public order.

Provost plans to reduce faculty salary gap after inflation freeze

Since before COVID-19, Ithaca College has had a larger faculty and staff salary gap when wages are compared to other higher education institutions. During the pandemic, this wage gap for faculty and staff widened as a result of a freeze on inflation-adjusted wages, according to David Gondek, associate professor in the Department of Biology and chair of the Faculty Council.
Over Spring 2024, Ithaca College witnessed multiple changes in leadership. The departure of some members will be followed by national searches that will commence in Fall 2024.

Nearing the end of the 2023–24 academic year, The Ithacan sat down to talk with La Jerne Cornish, the 10th president of Ithaca College. Cornish is in her second year of the role, after previously serving as interim president for the 2021–22 academic year. She has also served as provost, executive vice president and senior vice president of academic affairs since she arrived at the college in 2018. 
Casey Kendall, deputy chief information officer and associate vice president of applications and infrastructure, told SGC that iClicker and Tophat, applications used to track attendance, will no longer be used.

The Ithaca College Student Governance Council met April 29 to pass three bills regarding time extension when presenting bills, an ad-hoc committee to change orientation to further support incoming students from underrepresented backgrounds, and providing a senator position for the Students of Color Coalition.

The “Fostering an Alliance between SGC and New Student & Transition Programs (NSTP) to Assist First-Year and Transfer Students" bill outlines the importance of the council being directly involved with orientation planning, including understanding how orientation impacts first-year and transfer students who identify as first-gen or BIPOC, students who have a disability or are a part of a social group that is underrepresented at the college.

The Ithaca College Student Governance Council met April 22 to hear from first-generation senator LaRon Pigford about a bill he introduced regarding how SGC can assist first-year and transfer students during orientation. The council also met with Jennifer Metzgar, director of Student Health Services, to discuss introducing the new role of health insurance navigator at the Hammond Health Center.

The Terrace Elevator Connector Project includes a new elevator that will make six stops through the ground floor of the Terrace Dining Hall up to Terrace 1; an accessible walkway that will connect Baker Walkway and the Terrace Bridge level to the dining hall; and two all-gender bathrooms on the ground floor of the dining hall. Laundry malfunctions spark Office of Residential life to reevaluate laundry service provider

As some Ithaca College students share concerns about laundry machines in residence halls breaking down for several days, the Office of Residential Life is working to decrease disruptions to laundry services.
The results of the report concluded that undergraduate students with no disability or a single disability; who identify as men or women; who were not first-generation students; and who were white had a higher sense of belonging at the college than students with multiple disabilities, who identify on the transgender spectrum and are first-gen students.
