Nearing the end of the 2023–24 academic year, The Ithacan sat down to talk with La Jerne Cornish, the 10th president of Ithaca College. Cornish is in her second year of the role, after previously serving as interim president for the 2021–22 academic year. She has also served as provost, executive vice president and senior vice president of academic affairs since she arrived at the college in 2018. 
Casey Kendall, executive director of applications and infrastructure in Information Technology, told SGC that iClicker and Tophat, applications used to track attendance, will no longer be used.
SGC discusses AI integration process with Information Technology and passes three bills

The Ithaca College Student Governance Council met April 29 to pass three bills regarding time extension when presenting bills, an ad-hoc committee to change orientation to further support incoming students from underrepresented backgrounds, and providing a senator position for the Students of Color Coalition.
The “Liberated Zone” encampment was created at Cornell University on Thursday April 25. The encampment was created by the Pro-Palestine group Coalition for Mutual Liberation and it is intended to stay in place until Cornell agrees to their eight demands.

Students at Cornell University have set up an encampment on the Arts Quad at the university. According to a press release from The Coalition for Mutual Liberation, the group is "calling for Cornell to fully divest from companies that support the ongoing genocide in Gaza and end its close relationship with Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, with which it shares a campus in New York City."
Victoria Cabal, Rankin Climate’s executive vice president, of strategy and operations, said the company will continue working with the college to plan its upcoming course of action.
Community engages in understanding Campus Climate Survey results to discuss next steps

On April 25, the Campus Climate Committee co-chairs, in association with representatives from Rankin Climate, a company that collects institutional climate assessment data, gave two community presentations about the Key Findings report that was released April 16. 
First-year student Ben Epstein will be a StandWithUs Emerson Fellow during the 2024–25 academic year. He organized an event as a fellow to begin conversations about the Israel-Hamas war.

“Unity is a principle of all free-thinking societies,” first-year student Ben Epstein said during a StandWithUs event, held April 25. “It's our job as the next generation of leaders to lead this nation and the world toward a more unified future.”
Sophomore Paris Agiomavritis, who is on the appropriations committee and is the assistant to the vice president of communications, is running for the vice president of business and finance position.
SGC hears from Fall 2024 candidates ahead of elections

The Ithaca College Student Governance Council had their annual spring platform presentations April 23 for candidates to serve in the Fall 2024 semester.
The “Fostering an Alliance between SGC and New Student & Transition Programs (NSTP) to Assist First-Year and Transfer Students bill outlines the importance of the council being directly involved with orientation planning, including understanding how orientation impacts first-year and transfer students who identify as first-gen or BIPOC, students who have a disability or are a part of a social group that is underrepresented at the college.
SGC discusses orientation programming bill and hears about new health insurance navigator role

The Ithaca College Student Governance Council met April 22 to hear from first-generation senator LaRon Pigford about a bill he introduced regarding how SGC can assist first-year and transfer students during orientation. The council also met with Jennifer Metzgar, director of Student Health Services, to discuss introducing the new role of health insurance navigator at the Hammond Health Center.
Caroline Levine, professor of humanities at Cornell University, addresses the crowd on The Commons. Levine said she played a key role in Cornell’s decision to divest from fossil fuels in 2020. Cornell’s fossil fuel divestment movement aimed to stop the university from investing in oil and gas companies and contributing to climate change through its endowment. 
Local groups urge climate justice action, engage with politicians ahead of equity proposal vote

On April 22, Earth Day, students and Ithaca locals gathered on The Commons to declare a climate emergency on “Reclaim Earth Day.” Local groups — like Cornell on Fire and Extinction Rebellion Ithaca — alongside Cornell University, Tompkins Cortland Community College and some Ithaca College students marched to The Commons to participate.
The college worked with Rankin Climate, a company that assesses institutional climate and specifically works with the college’s working committee, to compile the results of the survey.  The survey was made up of 117 questions, 16 of which were open-ended. Questions from the 2016 Campus Climate Survey were used as a basis and reviewed again by the college.
